The Philippine Statistical Association, Inc. (PSAI) is an organization of the nation’s professional statisticians from academe, government, and the private sector.
Every year, the PSAI conducts its conference to promote scholarly discussions on relevant issues that need attention from the statistical community. The theme of this year’s forum is “Advancing Statistics for the Post-2015 Sustainable Development Agenda” which aims to establish greater appreciation, awareness and understanding of studies using statistics pertaining to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), as well as the indicative goals and targets of the post 2015 development agenda.
The Conference will cover various topics on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Food and Nutrition Security, Inequality, Statistical Methods, Means of Implementation, Health and Nutrition Statistics, Environment Statistics, and Socio-Economic Indicators, and other related topics and discussions.
The three-day Conference will feature two short training course on Social Media Analysis and on monitoring progress of local governments using small area statistics on 23 September. The first training course will show participants how to access streaming data from Twitter and other social network sites, and to perform analytics on these types of big data. The second training course, conducted in parallel to the first course, intends to share with the participants, ways of applying small area statistics in monitoring the performance of local government units as well as targeting rightful beneficiaries of government programs.
Speakers during the Conference include Governor Imee R. Marcos of Ilocos Norte, Mayor Chevylle V. Fariñas of Laoag City, Congresswoman Leni G. Robredo of Camarines Sur, Interim Deputy National Statistician Romeo S. Recide of the Philippine Statistics Authority, Dr. Bruce Tolentino of the International Rice Research Institute, Dr. Wilmina R. Lara, among others. Marcos and Fariñas will be giving a keynote address and welcome message, respectively on 24 September. Salceda, Robredo and Tolentino are expected to speak during a Plenary Session hosted by the World Food Programme on Food and Nutrition Security on 24 September. Lara will be speaking during the Plenary Session sponsored by Geodata Systems Technologies, Inc.. Recide will be talking about the country’s performance on the MDGs, and on proposed statistics for the SDGs during the Plenary Session on 25 September.
