The Philippine Statistical Association, Inc. (PSAI) will hold the 2016 PSAI Annual Conference on 31 August - 2 September 2016 in Naga City with the theme: Role of Statistics in Monitoring Progress on Social Protection. The Conference is an annual gathering that promotes scholarly discussion on urgent and relevant issues that need to be addressed by the statistical community.
Social Protection constitutes policies and programs that seek to reduce poverty and vulnerability to risks and enhance the social status and rights of the marginalized by promoting and protecting livelihood and employment, protecting against hazards and sudden loss of income, and improving people’s capacity to manage risks. (SDC Resolution No. 1 Series of 2007). Social Protection has four components, namely: labor market programs, social insurance, social welfare and social safety nets.
As Philippine Statisticians, we are called to recognize increasing demands for statistics to monitor progress made on social protection.
Thus, it is timely that the PSAI Annual Conference 2016 will delve on statistical research undertakings and studies that aim to aid policy- and decision-makers to where we are now and further action to take to bring forth a better Philippines.
Event highlights a 1-day Training and a 2-day Conference
On 31 August 2016, Short Training-Appreciation on Communicating Statistics through Information Graphics. The course will deal with the three “D’s” needed for Infographics for Statistics – Data, Design, and Distribution. It aims to provide participants with a review of basic statistical concepts and the knowledge and skills on the use of visual graphics to present information quickly and clearly. Participants will be introduced to the workflow of collecting, analyzing, storyboarding and producing visual stories.
A parallel training on Statistical Methods for Project Monitoring And Evaluation. It provides basic statistical concepts in data collection and analysis that will enable participants to conduct a quantitative project assessment with the aid of time-tested statistical tools, techniques and procedures for monitoring and evaluation purposes.
Participants are enjoined to bring their own laptops with installed MS Excel and Powerpoint.
The Conference on 1- 2 September 2016 aims to provide a forum for statisticians, producers and users of statistics to forge alliances that would create greater appreciation, awareness and understanding of statistics and relevant studies on social protection.
Research papers that focus on the applications of statistical methodology and innovative approaches in the production and analysis of data that would enable informed decisions on the Social Protection will be presented. The two-day Conference will highlight oral presentations on quality of life, labor protection, vulnerable groups, poverty, risk management, disaster preparedness, financial inclusivity, energy, and other relevant topics.
Student Paper Session
For this year, a student paper session will be conducted as a pre-conference activity. Papers prepared by undergraduate students from higher educational institutions, individual or group, relevant to the topic can be submitted. They shall be evaluated for relevance to the theme Cash prizes awaits best papers. Presenter of winning papers will be given travel allowance and hotel accommodation to attend the conference and present the paper.

Professionals from public and private sector, academe, and all other interested parties involved in the monitoring and analysis of the state of social protection in the country and other related statistics for development planning are invited to prepare papers and participate in this Conference. Pertinent details on the Conference will be released under Bulletin No. 2.
