It’s a back-to-back win for the UPLB Institute of Statistics (INSTAT) with Arianne Camielle dR. Caritos, Christine Glydel S. Roda, and Ma. Bernadette C. Secreto garnering the Best Paper Award (Student Division) during the 2017 SAS® Academic Analytics Conference on 9 February at the One Esplanade Place, Roxas Boulevard, Metro Manila. Prof. Francisco de los Reyes from the UP School of Statistics won the Best Paper Award in the Faculty Division. The winners of the Best Paper Award for student division in the first SAS® Academic Analytics Conference in 2013 — Angelyn K. Mananghaya, Micahelah de Chavez and Ian Nuestro coached by John Lorenzo Yambot, were also from INSTAT.
The students’ winning research paper, “Developing a Visualization Tool for Disaster Management in Local Government Units” derived vulnerability indices from the Census of Population and Housing and the Census of Agriculture and presented these barangay-level indices in a digitized map that allows straightforward comparison of vulnerability levels. The study showed that decision-making at the local government units can be supported with good data that is readily accessible and easily understood. The SAS® Academic Analytics Conference gathered all SAS Academic Program Partners - leaders, faculty and students across the country to share their knowledge and expertise on analytics. SAS® Philippines will donate all the top papers from the competition to select government agencies.
For their prize, the winners of both students and faculty divisions got an all-expense-paid trip to attend the SAS® Global Forum on 2-5 April 2017 in Florida, USA.
